Hurricane Andrew: 20 years later

An infographic for tampabay.com commemorating the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew – the compact Category 5 storm that “no one saw coming” which struck with such intensity that it decimated much of Homestead and the surrounding area. The storm slammed into South Florida not only with devastating effects for the individuals who lived in the area, but also forever changing the insurance and construction industries in the state. This graphic provides a visual breakdown of Hurricane Andrew in facts and figures: from wind speeds to the timeline and path of Hurricane Andrew to the billions of dollars in damage.

Interactive body graphic as navigation

The graphic was developed both in Flash and plain html to serve as a navigational element for content on a client’s site. The site will detect whether or not the visitor is on a flash compatible device. The client understood the need to provide the information to all users, but still wished to have a fancier version with more animation for the desktop audience. The body was illustrated in several positions (2D for a more traditional look) to simulate the illusion of rotating the figure. The leaf was their existing logo motif. Conventional Wisdom: $50 million in security

The newest installment in the Conventional Wisdom series is this shareable infographic detailing the expenditures in preparation for handling security during the RNC in Tampa. Rick Danielson and Jessica Vander Velde compiled this detailed accounting of how the $50 million federal grant was distributed to equip Tampa Bay agencies with uniforms, gear and equipment.
